Root Canal Therapy

Of all the dental jokes on television, the majority of them are about having a root canal done. What most people associate with root canals is the pain they were having with the tooth before the root canal was done. The term "root canal" refers to the part of the tooth that contains your nerve and blood supply. Root canal therapy is needed when the inside part of the canal becomes infected due to a deep decay, a problem with your bite, or injury.

When a tooth requires root canal therapy, you may be experiencing symptoms from the tooth, but sometimes you don't have any pain at all. Some signs to watch for are pain with chewing or biting, pain with pressure on the tooth, and lingering pain with hot or cold, or swelling around your tooth. If you experience any of these symptoms, please call Dr. Kerr at Kerr Family Dental on the square in Osceola so he can help diagnose what is wrong and help relieve the pain you are experiencing.

Steps of a Root Canal

Once a diagnosis is made and it is determined that a root canal is needed in order to save the tooth, Dr. Kerr will perform the following steps:

First, we will numb the tooth and gums to make sure you are completely comfortable during treatment.

Next, the cavity and infected tissue inside your tooth are removed using special precision instruments, and the root canal is cleaned out more with a special antibiotic treatment. Sometimes medication is put inside the tooth and left for a couple of weeks to help kill any remaining bacteria. We will seal it with a temporary filling while it heals.

Once everything looks good, the root part of the tooth is filled, and then the tooth is ready to be restored. Usually a crown is needed to restore the functionality of the tooth and to help prevent it from fracturing because we have removed the nerve and blood supply, your tooth may become brittle. The steps for a root canal can usually be completed in 1-3 visits.

You will begin to feel relief after your first appointment and by the time we place your dental crown, you will feel like yourself again.
