Dental Cleanings and Periodontal Treatment

Just like a house needs a strong foundation to stand on, so do your teeth. Healthy bone and gums are the strong foundation your teeth need in order to function properly. Regular dental cleanings and check-ups are essential in maintaining this healthy foundation. Your mouth is also the gateway to the rest of your body and research has linked periodontal (gum) infections to many other health issues such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. By achieving a healthy state in your mouth and maintaining it, you are protecting the rest of your body.

It is important to remember that plaque begins to form on your teeth within a few hours after leaving the dental office and after daily brushing. Even if you do a wonderful job brushing and flossing, the plaque that builds up will mineralize and become tartar which cannot be removed by a toothbrush. This tartar has to be removed by special dental instruments and this is why it is important to come for your regular cleanings. Dr. Kerr wants you to have the healthiest mouth possible, which in turn will improve your overall health and that is why he will recommend periodic cleanings and exams for you.

Benefits of a Cleaning

During your cleaning, the team at Kerr Family Dental will remove the plaque and tartar that has built up on your teeth since your last cleaning. There is bacteria in the plaque and tartar, which can lead to bone loss and tooth decay. By removing this bacteria we are helping to keep the foundation for your teeth healthy. The bacteria can also get into your blood stream and cause other complications with your overall health.

While you get your teeth cleaned, we will also offer different tips or techniques to help you keep your teeth as clean as possible in between your professional cleanings. There are a lot of different tooth-related products on the market now and we can help you navigate through them. You will also get an exam from Dr. Kerr to evaluate your oral health and check and see if there are any problems you might not be aware of.

Deep Cleanings

Scaling and root planing, or deep cleanings, may be needed if it has been a long time since you have had your teeth cleaned or if you have had periodontal disease in the past. Some signs of periodontal disease to watch for include bad breath, bleeding gums, gum recession, pocketing or tooth mobility. Even if you keep the top part of your teeth clean, but have deep pockets, there is tartar and bacteria that you can't see and can only be removed with a deep cleaning.

The deep cleaning process is similar to a normal cleaning except that you may have to be numb during the procedure to ensure you are comfortable. A deep cleaning also takes more time and may have to be completed over more than one visit. After all the teeth are cleaned, we will have you come back in several weeks to evaluate how your gums have responded to the treatment. Every situation is unique, so we may recommend that you have more than two cleanings a year to help keep your foundation healthy.
